Electric Hair Trimmer clipper Rechargeable Professional barber tools Mute Ceramic blade hairclipper Cutting machine 220V
Okay, so, you’re in a desperate need of a quality set of hair clippers, but the market is filled with hundreds of different brands and products and the search leaves you confused? You’re not alone, we’ve all been there. Yes, buying the right hair clipper is challenging, but hey, that’s where we can help!
More and more people are opting for hair clippers; some of them are professional barbers, while others simply want to save some money on the side and cut their own hair. It doesn’t matter in which group you belong; all that matters right now is buying the best hair clipper that will make the job go smoother for you.
There are a lot of reasons to see a barber: if you’re thinking of changing your hairstyle, if you want a hot towel shave, if you are into especially-complicated haircuts or a simple fade (which is terribly hard if you’re trying to do it yourself). But there are some times when you can take matters into your own hands. Keeping your haircut fresh between barber visits is one of them. Going full G.I. Jane and buzzing off your own hair could be one of those, too. We know it can be hard to justify a visit to a barber when you have the type of haircut you might be able to do in our bathroom. If you’re going to go that route, there are some things you need to know.
7 Things to Know Before Using Hair Clippers to Cut Your Own Hair
1. Decide on what style you want. Buzz cuts are a general style and have a ton of variations, so before firing up the clippers, consider the final outcome you’re hoping for.
2. Buy a hand mirror or create a dual-mirror setup. This is especially important if you’re doing this on your own because you’ll need to be able to see the back of your head.
3. Use your bathroom as a barber shop. Make sure it’s well-lit and you’re comfortable in front of the mirror. Go shirtless (or nude, as MH associate fitness editor Brett Williams endorses). It will make cleanup easier when you’re done.
4. Go slow and start with the longest guard. Gradually work with lower and lower guards till you get the length you want. Don’t rush and look at your head carefully as you go so you don’t miss any spots.
5. If you’re doing this yourself, stand up. You’ll need to be comfortable, but also be able to lean into the mirror to inspect the details. Don’t try to do this while sitting in a chair.
6. If all of this stresses you out, or you get stuck during the process, call up a professional to troubleshoot or watch a tutorial to guide you through the process.
7. Be prepared for upkeep. Just because you’re doing your cut yourself doesn’t mean you get a free pass on maintenance. Be prepared for touch ups at least every two weeks and sometimes more depending on how fast your hair grows.
Buy Professional Hair Clippers to Cut Your Hair, Not Beard Trimmers
The second, and more important thing, is you need to use the right pair of tools. That means using actual hair clippers, like the professional kind a barber uses, instead of trying to take your beard trimmer upstairs. Typically, hair clippers are more powerful than beard trimmers and are better for trimming all different kinds of hair types easily (though some trimmers are specifically designed for both). Investing in the best hair clippers if you’re going to do some at-home upkeep is essential if you want a haircut that looks good rather than homespun.
But a word of caution: “professional tools require upkeep and attention and may have a learning curve as you learn to use them,” says hairstylist Vaughn Acord. “They can also cute you or irritate your skin if you’re not familiar with how to sanitize or adjust them.” He recommends being cautious before taking matters into your own hands since barbers and hairstylists are trained in giving you a cut that’s right for your face and head shape. But if you’re going to DIY, or at least keep your cut looking fresh between appointments, we asked barbers and hairstylists which professional hair clippers they use for the freshest fades and tightest lines.
Clippers matter: whether you’re a professional barber hoping to up your game or just trying to save a buck by cutting your own hair, the right clippers can be the difference between success and failure.
The best hair clippers don’t only help you achieve a better cut – they make it easier, and often come with useful extra accessories.
Grabbing a barber grade clipper is like enjoying a Harley-Davidson instead of driving a moped. Sheer power and professionalism.
Any barber starting out needs 3 main tools: an adjustable blade clipper, a detachable blade one, and a T-blade professional trimmer. We’ll take a look at all of them in this guide and also talk about the best barber clippers and best barber trimmers we have today.
You need to find the right tool for the majority of the cuts you will be doing to use as your primary clipper. For everything else you’ll ned a secondary cutter. For instance, if your shop specializes in fades, then your primary clipper should be designed for that.
Keep The Blades Clean
Before you begin to cut your own or anyone else’s hair, make sure the blade area is clean, and any hair and debris are removed.
Most clipper sets come with their own small clipper brush and cleaning kit.
I find these brushes too small and flimsy.
I prefer to use an old, hard toothbrush to really get in among the ‘nooks and crannies’.
You can also use a wire brush, a cheap fingernail brush or hair tint brush, as long as they are quite sturdy.
Amazon sell a decent clipper cleaning brush if you haven’t got anything suitable.
Brush away all the hair clippings and debris from the blade area.
These small deposits can act like grit or sand if they get between the blades and blade teeth.
If unchecked they could eventually cause the blades damage and blunt them.
Brush everything away. Blowing sharply into the area will also help.
Ensure The Blade is Aligned Correctly
This step is particularly important if you intend to cut other people’s hair or are using your clippers in a barbers or hair salon.
Every time you come to use the clipper, hold it sideways and look down its length.
The blades should be either parallel with the cutter blade or set slightly back.
There shouldn’t be any teeth protruding and the blade should be perfectly straight. A crooked blade or a stray tooth could easily nic or cut you, or a client.
You might need to use a Phillips screw driver to loosen the blade screws.
There’s no need to take them out, just loosen them so there’s enough ‘give’ to wiggle the blade back into place.
Be careful when tightening the screws again or you might offset the cutting blade.
Alternate between each screw to ensure the blade doesn’t twist and become crooked.
When all the screws are tightened, visually check again to ensure the blade is even and correctly aligned.
Turn on the clipper and lightly run the blade over your finger or hand to ensure its aligned correctly.
Oil Every Cut, Every Time
Wahl Premium Hair Clipper Blade Lubricating Oil for Clippers, Trimmers & Blade Corrosion for Rust Prevention – 4 Fluid Ounces – Model 3310-300This is paramount to the care and maintenance of your clipper blade.
A well oiled clipper will last you many years.
The main cause for a good quality clipper to break, is due to lack of oil.
Your clipper should come with the right oil, but you’re going to need more.
The rule is simple; every time you use the clipper, you should apply some oil to it.
Make this as habitual as turning it on. If you do this, you won’t forget.
It’s like cleaning your teeth without any toothpaste – you just wouldn’t do it!
Apply a drop of oil to each corner of the moving blade and a few drops in the middle, into the blade teeth.
Turn the clipper on and let it run for a few seconds to get an even spread.
Dab any excess oil and you’re good to go.
Be careful not to apply too much oil, as this can attract a lot of dust, dirt and hair clippings.
This will turn into a sludge and clog up the blade.
Not enough oil will cause the blade to run dry and start pulling and dragging, and become dull.
Clipper spray is a legal requirement for barbers and salons in the US. It keeps the blades cool and prevents burning the client and more importantly it disinfects the blade.
It also reduces wear and tear on the blade, prolonging its lifespan.
Clipper spray helps protect against rust, which is important in salons and barber shops that have humid and moist atmospheres.
It is good practice to spray the clippers in front of the client. This shows your professionalism and cleanliness.
It is not as important if you are using the clipper purely for your own hair cuts, but I would still recommend you use clipper spray, especially if you buy one of the top end professional clippers such as the Oster Classic 76.
Change The Blade
Changing the clipper blade is a rare event and will only need to be done just once or twice in the lifetime of the clipper.
If you follow the steps above, your clipper blade will last you a long time.
But there may be occasions when you need a new blade.
You may accidentally drop the clipper and damage it, or chip one of the teeth.
The best thing to do is buy a spare blade when you buy the clipper.
That way you’ll know you have the right one and it’s available as soon as you need it. No dramas if you need your hair cutting that day.
If you do use your spare blade, buy another one immediately and drop it into your draw, ready for any further mishaps!
